It all started in 1981…
Growing up in Blair, NE, Dave McKinnis got his start in the roofing industry from a very early age. When he was just 12 years old he was paid one dollar per bundle to take shingles up a ladder and put them on a roof. He continued working in the roofing industry throughout his teenage years until the state’s Department of Labor found out and made him quit. However, that didn’t stop Dave or his older brother as they worked for themselves throughout High School.
After Dave graduated from school, he starting roofing in different states. Living out of his truck, he shingled apartment buildings and eventually ended up in Seattle working for American Roofing Company. At the age of 20, he became the manager because the owner fell off a roof and was hurt badly. Dave ran the company for a year and a half before the owner could return. After moving on from American Roofing Company, he worked for other roofing companies for a few years. In May of 1981, he moved back to Blair Nebraska to start McKinnis Roofing and Sheet Metal.

Since Dave McKinnis started the business, he’s had a focus on doing the job right from roofing and repair to siding and windows. Through his experience working with insurance companies, complex building codes, and demanding customers, Dave learned to be a stickler for refusing to cut corners. That same relentless desire for excellence has become a hallmark for the McKinnis business in everything they do.
With multiple family members involved in the day-to-day operation of the business, excellence is part of our DNA and is taken personally by every member of our team. When a McKinnis Roofing & Sheet Metal representative shows up on the job, every customer gets the same level of attention as if Dave McKinnis himself was there. We believe it’s the only way to do business.
It’s how we’ve grown and prospered over the past 40 years – by taking pride in our work, by understanding that if we do our job right, you’ll tell your friends and neighbors about us. And we mentor the next generation of the McKinnis Roofing & Sheet Metal employee family to uphold these same high standards. It’s just the right thing to do. After all, we live in this community too.
