mckinnis gives back

Have you ever been through a neighborhood and wondered what the little structures were in some yards that were full of books? We had the same question. So, when Duet asked if we wanted to be a community partner by helping build ten Little Libraries, we were immediately on board! Giving back to the community has always been a priority at McKinnis Roofing and Sheet Metal.

Duet – Develop. Unite. Empower. Together.

Duet is a service provider for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Duet provides support to about 600 people in day support centers, residential support, job coaching, employment opportunities, continuing education, and community advocacy throughout Douglas, Sarpy, Cass, Dodge, and Washington counties. Duet’s mission is to provide support in a person-centered approach as they Develop, Unite, and Empower, Together.

Little Library Project

The Little Library project was initiated by people receiving support as a way to connect with the community through providing reading materials with book drives and a place for people to pick up a book. As a Duet community partner, once McKinnis heard about the need, we embraced this project as a team. When Duet came to pick up the libraries, a couple of people receiving services were able to attend. Joe is looking forward to stocking the library at his day location. He commented his favorite one is the gray library.

Next time you are driving around the area, look for these Little Libraries. Each one has a variety of books and has its own interesting story and meaning behind it.

Aaron Heiden, Lead Carpenter

Aaron Heiden, Lead Carpenter at McKinnis, said the design idea was a group effort. “We wanted to display to the community what McKinnis does and construct a sturdy library that would last a lifetime!” Heiden continued, “the fact that people still love to read books, and not everything has to come from the internet made me want to help with this community project.”

Aaron Brock, Residential Superintendent

Aaron Brock, Residential Superintendent, stepped in and helped design the five different Little Library roofs to feature the roof styles we install at McKinnis. He wanted to show the public that a roof can be unique and there are many styles of roofs available. “This project was a way for me to show my creative side and at the same time educate the community on the diverse types of roofs McKinnis installs.” His favorite is the red library with the Barn/Gambrel Roof. “It took longer to build, but I love the color and the shape of the roof.”

Brock also said, “All 10 Little Libraries are different. We used LP Smartside Primed Siding, then painted them in various colors. We did an EPDM Rubber flat roof constructed from Firestone materials, a Barn/Gambrel Roof, Gable Roof, Shed/Single Slope roof, and a HIP Roof, all featuring GAF HDZ Timberline Shingles.”
