You wouldn’t think one more award would be meaningful to a company that has a wall of them in its lobby. This 42+-year-old company is proud to be officially recognized as a Nebraska’s Safest Company by the National Safety Council.

McKinnis: Safest Company in Nebraska Award Winner

Safety is No Accident

Russ Campbell, Safety Director at McKinnis is pleased with all the awards the company has garnered, but there’s a special aspect to this win. “Safety has always been a priority for us and we’ve worked hard, doing everything we can to keep our employees safe through training and awareness,” he said. “Since day one, we’ve focused on “safety first”.

About The Award: Nebraska’s Safest Company

The Nebraska’s Safest Company Award was established to recognize and celebrate companies that make safety a priority and have a commendable safety program and impeccable safety records based on their industry and size.

Russ explains that submitting an application for the Safest Company Award requires thorough record-keeping and ongoing proactive safety efforts. Applicants are judged on three years of OSHA 300A logs and supporting safety program information, including policies and steps it takes to reduce on-the-job accidents. “Based on safety logs and our safety programs, we outscore the national average for safety in the construction/roofing industry. Plus, we received 129 points on our safety program scorecard, 50 points higher than the points required,” he said.

Russ has served as the Safety Director for McKinnis’ safety and training department for seven years. Before he assumed that position, he spent many years in the field. In other words, he knows the special challenges that come with keeping workers safe while on the job — an occupation that ranks exceptionally high in on-site accidents.

Our Commitment to Safety

Roofing is the third most dangerous industry in the country, behind logging (number one in risks) and hunting/fishing. According to the annual Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, the fatality rate in roofing is 13 times higher than the average. Other sources indicate that a roofer is 15 times more likely to end up as a fatality compared to someone employed in almost any other type of work.1

The Safest Company in Nebraska award confirms McKinnis’ commitment to safety, reassuring its workforce and customers that the company is serious about delivering an accident-free experience. McKinnis is so committed to safety that it begins every meeting with safety protocol messaging.

Bottom line: you can’t be too safe. And at the end of the workday, McKinnis knows its efforts are paying off when everyone makes it home to their families.
